DirectRooms.com announces that scores of dragons will be thrashing through the water of Alster Lake as teams compete in Hamburg?s famous dragon boat race.

July 7, 2011 (FPRC) -- Over two days from 21st to 22nd August, Dragon Boat Festival 2011 will witness around 100 teams giving it everything as they race for honours and pride in the mixed events. Prizes will be awarded for certain races which will be made up of men?s and women?s events. The longest of these being a gruelling 1,500 metres, while short sprints of 250 metres will also be common.
Each team will consist of a steerer known as the sweep, who directs the boat from the back, the drummer then sets the pace and 20 paddlers pull the boat through the water as they sit facing the drummer.
The drummer is key, as their role is not just ceremonial but they dictate and judge when to push and when to hold back, and the skill is being able to set the pace with the lead paddlers.
Many of Hamburg?s businesses, clubs and amateur crews will make up the teams taking part but overseas competitors are also set to join which will result in greater demand for hotels in Hamburg. Various shows will also run around the lake, with entertainment for children, film screenings, refreshments and ceremonies from Asian cultures.
Lek Boonlert, marketing head at DirectRooms.com commented: 'The races are great fun to watch with huge crowds turning out to cheer on the teams. This means however that hotels are highly sort after and vacancies can be limited.'
