Download Wiz Khalifa won Best New Artist at the BET Awards of 2011

Short Biogrphy of Wiz Khalifa, young musician who won 'The Best New Artist at the BET Awards of 2011'. Review of his released mixtapes, tours and activities.

 Print View

August 19, 2011 (FPRC) -- Known by his stage name Wiz Khalifa, was born as Cameron Jibril Thomaz on September 8, 1987 in Minot, North Dakota. His mother and a father were serving in the military. The family moved to Pittsburgh when Khalifa was the age of two. In October of 1990 Wiz was separated from his mother, who left him in the hands of her sister while she served in Operation Desert Storm. His parents divorced when Khalifa was about three years old. He would move between Pittsburgh and South Carolina, Georgia, Oklahoma, Germany, Japan, and England as his parents were reassigned to different posts over the next thirteen years.

Wiz was forced to mature quicker than his peers during his travels. He was constantly faced with new schools, and new sets of friends, and he found it difficult to become attached to anyone outside his family roots. This kind of life gave Wiz an opportunity to broaden his mind, and offered him many experiences from which to draw inspiration. He would write his thoughts down every day and began to perceive the world differently than most kids. These thoughts would become the foundation for his future recordings.

By the age of 14, with a few songs under his belt, Wiz was already drawing comparisons with his commanding voice and witty wordplay.
While he has been influenced by artists such as Jay-Z, Camron, and the Notorious B.I.G., Wiz was determined to create his own identity.

Pittsburgh has long been searching for its first major Hip Hop star. Some have flirted with success, while others have floundered in the masses. At the age of 19, Wiz Khalifa has developed into the prodigy that Pittsburgh has been looking for, and he plans to represent his city to the fullest.

His stage name is derived from khalifa, an Arabic word meaning "successor", and wisdom, which was shortened to Wiz when Khalifa
was fifteen. Khalifa stated that the name also came from being called "young Wiz 'cause I was good at everything I did, and my granddad is Muslim, so he gave me that name; he felt like that's what I was doing with my music." He got his stage name tattooed on his 17th birthday.

He released his first official mixtape 2005 Prince of the City: Welcome to Pistolvania. His first full length street album named Show and Prove he released later in 2006.

In 2007, Khalifa released two mixtapes: Grow Season, hosted by DJ
Green Lantern and released on July, 2007, and Prince of the City 2, released on November, 2007.

His debut Warner Bros. single "Say Yeah" reached number 25 on the Billboard Rhythmic Top 40 music chart.

The samples "Better Off Alone" by Alice Deejay. Khalifa's vocals from "Say Yeah" appear near the end of Pittsburgh mash up producer Girl Talk's 2008 album, Feed the Animals, over music from Underworld's "Born Slippy", Usher's "Love in This Club", and the Cure's "In Between Days".

Khalifa appeared with The Game, David Banner and Play-n-Skillz at U92's Summer Jam at the USANA Amphitheatre in West Valley City, Utah on August 2, 2008. Khalifa released the mixtapes Star Power in September 2008, and Flight School in April 2009.

He left the Warner Bros. Records in July 2009 after numerous delays in releasing his planned debut album for the label, First Flight.
Khalifa stated to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that, ?I learned a lot during my time there and matured as an artist during the process. I?m happy to be moving on with all of my material and having the chance to be in control of my next moves?.

Since then he has released a further six mixtapes and a collaboration mixtape titled How Fly with friend Curren$y. His debut album, Deal or No Deal, shown up in November of 2009. It reached first place on the iTunes hip hop chart.

As part of the 2010 South by Southwest Music Festival Khalifa performed at Emo's in Austin, Texas in March 2010. He appeared on the cover of XXL magazine that same month, for the magazine's annual list of Top 10 Freshman, which included Donnis, J. Cole, Pill, Freddie Gibbs, and Fashawn. Wiz Khalifa was named 2010 "Rookie Of The Year" by "The Source", with alongside Rick Ross, "The Man Of The Year"

Khalifa released the free mixtape Kush and Orange Juice for download on April, 2010. Due to Khalifa's devoted grassroots fan base, the mixtape became the No. 1 trending topic on Twitter.

He performed at the 2010 Rock the Bells festival, along with hip hop veterans Wu-Tang Clan, Snoop Dogg, Lauryn Hill, A Tribe Called Quest, Rakim, KRS-One, Jedi Mind Tricks and Slick Rick. Khalifa declined an invitation to tour with rapper Drake and launched his own. The tour "Waken Baken" a 50-city national tour with rapper Yelawolf, scheduled to last from September to October 2010, sold out every venue. On November 2010, during this tour Wiz Khalifa was arrested for possession and trafficking of marijuana at East Carolina University. He was released the next morning after a $300000 bail, and resumed his tour.

Winning with nearly 70,000 votes, Khalifa was named MTV's Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010, and beating out finalists Nicki Minaj, J. Cole, Travis Porter, and Diggy Simmons.

2010-11: Mainstream success

Khalifa released "Black and Yellow", produced by Stargate, which has received radio airplay. The title of the song refers to the colours of the
Pittsburgh Steelers. The single was peaked at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

On March 29, 2011, Khalifa released his first studio album, Rolling Papers. The album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart, with first-week sales of 197,000 copies in the United States. On June 26, 2011, Khalifa won Best New Artist at the BET Awards of 2011.

He is also the founder of the rap crew Taylor Gang, which includes friends Kev Tha Hustler, Ekko, Smallz Money and Gene Stovall. They derived the name from the fact they always used to wear Chuck Taylor shoes.

Khalifa's girlfriend Amber Rose ? who has been a tabloid fixture since dating Kanye West ? told hip-pop site GlobalGrind that she was planning to get married and have kids with the rising rap star.

Joan Rivers That Show Available for the First Time Since Its Original NBC Broadcast

The Comedian?s Hilarious Debut TV ChatFest is a Virtual Late ?60s Time Capsule

 Print View

August 19, 2011 (FPRC) -- BRIDGEPORT, Conn. ? Now fans new and old can enjoy Joan Rivers? That Show ? available to the public for the first time since its original network broadcast more than four decades ago ? being released by Film Chest on its American Pop Classics label.

On Aug. 22, the first 65 episodes (of 250) of That Show will be available on free, ad-supported Hulu and the Hulu Plus subscription service. The episodes are remastered from the original broadcast tapes for the highest audio/visual quality. More episodes will follow on Hulu and Hulu Plus.

Long before The Joan Rivers Show in the early ?90s ? when her daughter (and future co-star), Melissa, was barely a year old ? Rivers hosted her first talk show, That Show, airing weekdays in syndication 1968-69 on NBC.

Taped in New York City and produced by the young working mother and her husband, Edgar, each show hosted a top celebrity, as well as an ?expert? tackling the day?s featured subject. In Joan?s now-beloved brash, staccato style, the guests and the subject were frequently at odds: An etiquette writer vs. boxer Rocky Graziano; a psychotherapist who had written a book on martial arts vs. James Earl Jones, star of The Great White Hope.

The hit show ? which boosted the NBC time slot to its highest rating in years ? is a virtual time capsule of the day, featuring such high-profile celebrity guests as Johnny Carson (her first guest), Soupy Sales, Ed Sullivan, Florence Henderson, David Susskind, James Earl Jones and many more!

At ?300 words a minute,? the Emmy-winning Rivers ? with her high energy and irreverent wit ? hilariously tears into a multitude of subjects from her own life: from nudism to buying a new car ? Only Joan can host a show about podiatry and leave the audience in tears.

That Show episodes are presented in full screen with an aspect ratio of 4 x 3 and original sound.

Jesse Ventura Interview with Back Page Magazine

Jimi Hendrix, Keith Richards, and His New Book ?63 Documents the Government Doesn?t Want You to Read?

 Print View

August 19, 2011 (FPRC) -- The ever-outspoken Jesse Ventura sat down with Back Page Magazine recently and spoke frankly about democracy, citizen activism, and Rock and Roll.

While several of the topics covered in the new interview are drawn from his new book 63 Documents the Government Doesn?t Want You to Read, the new online music and entertainment e-zine prodded Ventura to also talk about more joyful and inspirational aspects of his life, which include his connections to rock and roll music.

Ventura has had a cornucopia of careers including that of Navy Seal, professional wrestler, Governor of Minnesota, actor, television commentator, and author. He recently hosted his own popular television program on TruTv called ?Conspiracy Theory With Jesse Ventura.?

Throughout all of Ventura?s various professional and personal undertakings he has consistently been celebrated as an opinionated, straight-from-the-hip political gadfly. His attacks on the perceived hypocrisies and duplicities of the former Bush administration are memorable and ongoing.

However, as Ventura discusses in this interview, the thrust of most all of his philosophical rants is more to provide a wake-up call to the sleeping citizenry, who he believes need to take more responsibility and action for what happens in their lives.

Most people may not know that Jesse Ventura also once was a bodyguard for the Rolling Stones, or that he has a deep fondness and friendship with many of rock and roll?s legendary performers. In the Back Page Magazine interview, Ventura recollects a few of his experiences and opinions on Jimi Hendrix, Keith Richards, Robbie Robertson of The Band, and Led Zeppelin (his favorite band).

Although Back Page Magazine?s focus is on rock music?s classic artists and songwriters, it plans to feature numerous thought-provoking and entertaining interviews outside the scope of music.

Fierce Comics to Launch New Title at New York Comic Con

Fierce Comics to Release Midwalker #1 at the Largest Popular Culture Convention on the East Coast

 Print View

August 24, 2011 (FPRC) -- Fierce Comics today announced that it will launch the company?s third title, Midwalker, at the 2011 New York Comic Con, held October 13-16, at the Javits Center in Midtown Manhattan. The book follows the experiences of Joshua Fischer after a serious head injury that almost cost him his life. Years after the injury, Fischer discovers he has the remarkable ability to cross partway into the ethereal realm whereby he is enveloped in, and can control, amazing energies. But the euphoric feeling associated with crossing over turns out to be far more addictive than he ever anticipated. ?I wanted to explore what it would be like for a person if he or she were free to experience a taste of heaven while being tethered to Earth,? said writer Ben Filipiak. ?How addictive would that ability be? How would it affect your relationships, or your perspective on life?? Soon after discovering his abilities, Joshua finds himself hunted by Growtesque, a large and powerful demon warrior sent to destroy him.

The story is being brought to life by the talented Mike Shoyket (Titans, Superman 80-page Giant, G.I. Joe: America?s Elite) who is both penciling and inking the book. "Besides the fun superhero stuff, it's a figuration of how people, and especially young people, deal with horrible tragedy. I think it's a very special story,? said Shoyket.

Fierce Fan favorite Scott Reed returns to color the book. Scott?s comics career began as an inker for Malibu Comics (Star Trek:DS9, Mortal Kombat, Ultraverse) and Dark Horse Comics (Godzilla, G.I.Joe). He later wrote, illustrated and self-published his creator-owned comics under his self-publishing label Web?s Best Comics (The Last Odyssey, High Strangeness). Reed was the penciler, inker and colorist of Redneck Red from Fierce Comics. More recently, he has written for Image Comics (The Overman) and Marvel Comics (Son Of Hulk: Realm Of Kings and Dark Son: The Enigma Force).

?I?m fortunate to have such an outstanding creative team to work with on this project. We?re receiving very favorable responses to both the story and the art in this book. It?s definitely looking like we have another winner on our hands,? said Filipiak. A limited number of preview edition copies of the first in the six-issue series will be available to purchase at the New York Comic Con.
